Imagine you’re walking in downtown Chicago with your bag-less significant other. Here’s how it goes…
Your Partner: Hey, would you mind carrying something for me?
You: Sure! Hand it over, I’ll throw it in my purse.
Naively, you think he’s going to hand you a pen. Oh, how wrong you are.
Suddenly, you’re now holding his iPhone, a pen, a pocketknife, a tube of chapstick, and his iPad. Yep, thanks buddy. Your bag is now 3 lbs heavier, and he’s walking the city streets light as a bird.
This. Has. To. Stop.
Why Don’t U.S. Guys Carry Their Own Bag?
I spent two weeks in Spain a few months ago. And you know what?
TONS of men carried sleek, stylish bags over there. They weren’t dumping their baggage onto their wives and girlfriends. NO! They were carrying it around themselves. And, no one was giving them a funny look for carrying a bag.
If you’ve ever been to Spain then you know you can stick your foot out and trip about six gorgeous people in the blink of an eye. They’re everywhere. So trust me, the fact that these men were carrying bags did not, for one second, detract from their manly gorgeousness. If fact, it added to it.
What I don’t understand is, why hasn’t the man bag caught on over here in the States? I mean, you see actors (see image above) carrying them around all the time. In Europe and Japan, no one thinks twice about it. What gives?
My guess is that guys over here still think they need to be like the fabled cowboys of the Old West. You know, the epitome of manliness. They don’t want a purse.
But you know what? Cowboys had saddle bags. Today’s men don’t have horses to carry around all their stuff. So, it’s time today’s men ponied up and started carrying it themselves.
Besides, one of the most iconic, manly idols carried a bag constantly. Who am I talking about?
Yes, even Chewbacca carried a man bag.
Embrace the Man Bag…
My plea to all men is this: embrace the man bag. The rest of the world is carrying them now, so find one you like and hop on board. STOP making your wives, girlfriends, partners, and friends carry all your stuff. There are some truly awesome bags out there that are designed for men. These bags are rustic, sexy, cool and useful.
Ladies, don’t be afraid to broach the subject, but go in armed. It’s best to have plenty of pictures of manly actors and leaders who carry a man bag, as well as some of your top man bag picks. Dolce and Gabbana, Diesel, and Juicy Couture all make awesome man bags. And we’re thinking of designing a fair trade man bag here at Earth Divas.
So, what’s not to love?
