Eco Fashion Week: Vancouver 2010

If you’re lucky enough to live in or around Vancouver, then you’ll want to make sure you head into the city September 28-30. Why? Because the city is hosting Eco Fashion Week. And it looks like it’s going to be amazing.

Eco Fashion Week Vancouver is just like Fashion Weeks that take place all over the globe. There are runway shows, trade shows, seminars…

But there’s a big difference. It’s an Eco Fashion Week, which means only designers who practice sustainable design and use sustainable materials are allowed in.

How cool is that?

And it’s amazing what these designers can do. Just look at the gorgeous picture I posted at the top of the article. The stunning dress, the beautiful model, the soft light…

This is eco fashion on an entirely new level.

Getting INTO Eco Fashion Week is so easy thing. There are some seriously stringent criteria that designers must follow if they’re to be allowed in.

Like what?

  • Items must be fair trade/ethically sourced
  • Designed and constructed in your local community
  • Custom/slow made (this encourages “slow fashion” instead of mass-produced, disposable fashion)
  • Organic/natural textiles, vintage and/or Recycled/Reborn textiles
  • Cruelty-free (vegan/animal free fashion)
  • Eco printing
  • Green Marketing practices
  • Socially responsible (like donating a portion of sales to eco charities)
  • Resource Efficiency
  • Eco Certification

As you can see, designers have to jump through a lot of hoops to get into Eco Fashion Week. But when they do, they’re golden.

Coordinators are still pulling a lot of the information together about this event, so I’ll make sure to keep you updated as the event gets closer! This is exactly the type of event the fashion world needs to keep raising awareness about eco fashion, and the fact that it’s not just a trend anymore, but a movement that’s picking up speed.
