Eco Friendly Bags for Back to School

I almost fell over when I walked into a store a couple of weeks ago and saw it. It was a tower of Back to School supplies: pencils, notebooks, backpacks…

What happened to summer?

We can avoid it all we want to, but the fact is that the kids will be heading off to school, many of them in just a few weeks.

If you do have kids, then you know most of them, especially older kids, want a fashionable backpack. But many backpacks are made with polyvinyl chloride (PVC), a plastic with a very bad environmental rep.

So what’s the solution?

Eco friendly, fair trade backpacks and messengers. They’re fashionable, they’re cool, and they’re have a very small footprint.

What are my top picks?

1. EarthDivas Recycled Rice Bag

I can’t help loving this super cool recycled Rice Bag Messenger bag we’ve started making here at Earth Divas. I have the backpack version of this bag, and use it all the time carrying stuff around town. These things are sturdy.

It’s made from, you guessed it, recycled rice bags. And it’s made by hand by our artisans, which means it’s fair trade.

And the best part? It’s only $19.99. Whoo-hoo!

2. Terracycle’s Drink Pouch Backpack

How fun is this backpack from Terracycle?

I love it! I have a messenger bag almost identical to this, and it’s held up under some serious use. These bags are made with 100% recycled juiceboxes, and would be great for younger kids going to grade school because they’re so lightweight.

3. Simple’s Combover Organic Cotton and Hemp Messenger Bag

Ok, sorry for the ultra-small picture…that’s the largest I could snag off Simple’s site. But if you head over there you can check it out with their larger pictures.

I really love how this bag is designed. It uses organic cotton and hemp, and looks like it’d be great for college-bound kids.

The Combover sells for $85.

4. Earth Divas Deluxe Hemp Backpack with Laptop Storage

Our Deluxe Hemp Backpack is another great option for eco-friendly back to school bags. It’s made out of 100% and, like all the products here at Earth Divas, it’s Fair Trade.

It also has an awesome organizer pocket for pens and other small gadgets. And the laptop storage section will keep your laptop cushioned from everything else in there.

What I love about this bag is that it’s a blank canvas; I’ve seen people who attached color patches to this bag to decorate it just how they want. Teenagers will turn this thing into a work of art.

Last Word…

Do any of you have some eco friendly bags you’d like to share? If so, I’d love to see them! I love seeing what other brands and designers are doing. It’s so inspirational!

  1. It is very sad to see kids carry bags made from dangerous materials and here you have some fabulous bags-I like the mustard/red -I wish I was still a student-Great post!

  2. There is a line of reusable shopping bags that you can use as a fundraiser for a school called Dodo Bags. They’re really cute too!

  3. Green Sentiments is a supplier of reusable, eco-friendly jute bags.

Choosing a reusable jute bag is one way to take responsibility for minimizing waste and for using resources in a sustainable way thereby avoiding large landfills which affect the environment and wildlife. Plastic bags are becoming a global problem. There’re adding to landfill and affecting the world’s wildlife. That’s why more and more customers are choosing eco-friendly alternatives.
