Making a Difference in Indian Slums

So the owner of Earth Divas, Ed, is still in India. It’s been a crazy trip for him so far as he searches for new artisans and vendors to design some awesome, new fair trade bags for us.

One of the gems he’s found on his travels is SPEEDTrust. I mentioned them briefly last week in my Update from India post, but I wanted to talk about them in a bit more detail today because what they’re doing in India is simply incredible.

SPEEDTrust…Making a Difference

SPEED Trust stands for Slum People Education and Economic Development (SPEED). The organization was founded in 2003 and is based in Chennai, India.

Basically, the organization aims to help socially disadvantaged people, especially women and children (and especially those women and children who are handicapped in some way) earn a livable wage. They encourage the women to learn income-generating crafts (like sewing) so they can become independent and provide for their families.

They also provide education for children and get them off the streets.

The following pictures are some of the women and children that SPEEDTrust is helping improve their lives…

SPEEDTrust Bags…

The coolest thing I have to share is that we’ve partnered with SPEEDTrust to make a whole line of fair trade bags for Earth Divas!

Because we pay 30% over local wage rate, and because we give 100% of our profits back to our artisans at the end of the year in the form of bonus check, the women and children you see in these pictures are some of the same people you’ll be helping, directly, when you buy one of our bags.

Whoo-hoo!

As soon as I get some pictures of what our cool new bags are going to look like, you can bet your bunny I’ll be putting them up here on the blog to show all of you. I’m so excited, so stay tuned!
