Upcycling is the art of taking something old and turning it into something new. And, it’s one of my favorite ways of going green because you’re giving new life to something that otherwise might end up in the trash.
One of my favorite upcycled bags we sell at Earth Divas is our Jute Young and Fun Handbag. And listen, you don’t have to be young for this bag; I use mine daily to haul books, mail, and my tiny purse. Take a look…
The cool thing about this bag, and many of our other eco-friendly handbags, is that it used to be made out of something else. This bag, as you can tell from the picture, use to be a bag of rice. Now, instead of rotting in a landfill, it’s been given a new life as a handbag. I love that!
There are tons of ways you can start upcycling in your life. All you have to do is look around and use your imagination. There are also a ton of great ideas online that will help get your creative juices flowing.
For instance, imagine your bike tire just popped and you’re about to throw it in the trash because you can’t patch it. No good!
Instead, why not turn your old bike tire into a sweet new wallet or purse? Take a look:
Yeah, it’s super cool. You can find some great instructions for this project over at one of my favorite sites, Instructables.com.
What about that old leather belt that no longer fits? You can easily turn that belt into a cool cuff. I have one of these myself and I love it! Take a look…
Here are the instructions, again from Instructables.
The cool thing about upcycling is that you can do it with just about anything. That vintage, sea-foam green Tupperware bundt pan makes an awesome light fixture…those spoons you’re about to donate? They’d make a sweet windchime.
Upcycling is a great way to go green and get creative at the same time. Which is why I’m always on the lookout for cool new projects!
